Leadership through Rough Seas: piloting shipping to low-carbon growth
A new publication from Xyntéo
The report in brief
Responsible for a growing share of global CO2 emissions, shipping is part of the climate problem.
But its carbon efficiency relative to other forms of freight transport makes it a pivotal part of the
solution – provided shipping industry leaders adopt the long view and take action now.
Political bids to lessen dependence on oil imports, the electrification of the car industry,
a potential shift towards more localised manufacturing – these are a few trends that could change the
traditional structure of demand for shipping. The winners in this new competitive landscape,
argues Xyntéo in this new report, will be shipping companies that develop and deploy the right technology;
that engage creatively with policymakers to craft effective regulation; that invent new business models;
and that collaborate along and across value chains to save carbon and money.
The international shipping industry’s close correlation with global economic growth means that
it is woven tightly into many of the world’s value chains. Its ability to meet the low-carbon
challenge will have both implications and lessons for other industries seeking to make the low-carbon transition.
The launch
"Leadership through Rough Seas" was launched formally on 15 March 2010 at the Norwegian Shipowners’
Association (NSA) in Oslo, Norway.
At a special seminar held during the NSA’s annual general assembly, Xyntéo chairman Dr Osvald Bjelland
presented the report’s main conclusions to an audience of Norwegian maritime leaders.
Karl-Johan Bakken, CEO of Farstad Shipping, and Nina Jensen of leading environmental
organisation WWF served as respondents.
A GLTE partnership
The result of a partnership between Xyntéo and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association,
"Leadership through Rough Seas" takes as its starting point the strategic framework for low-carbon growth developed by the Global
Leadership & Technology Exchange (GLTE).
GLTE is an international business consortium of some of the world’s leading businesses from across a
range of industries. GLTE partners work together to transform thinking about the climate challenge
into low-carbon growth and innovation.
